Workshop Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Next Workshop?

We, unfortunately, have not been able to confirm a date for our 2021 Spring Workshop. We will update this page as soon as that information becomes available

Can I pre-register?

At this point in time we do not do advanced registration. Our classrooms are large enough to accommodate many musicians comfortably. Registration takes place at the door on the morning of the workshop. Our team will be there, ready to help and guide you.

Why are there two different prices listed for admission?

We have a member price and a non-member price. Members save $5 of the cost of Workshop Admission. If you would like to know more about how to become a member please click the 'become a member' button below

I can only stay for part of the day. What happens if I can't attend the evening concert?

Admission to the evening concert is included in the price of admission for the workshop. If you are unable to attend, that is absolutely fine, but we do not give a discount if you cannot attend the concert.

Lunch is included, what if I have allergies or special dietary needs?

We serve a buffet style lunch of salads, sandwiches and wraps, along with some crackers and other goodies. We have a limited number of gluten free options, as well as some vegan and vegetarian offerings. Because it is a first come, first served buffet style lunch we unfortunately cannot guarantee that all of these options will be available at all times.

Which class should I take?

This question is the most asked question, but also the most difficult difficult to answer.

As a general rule beginners should have basic knowledge of their instruments. They should either be able to understand tabs or have some experience site reading or learning by ear, and should be able to find specific notes on the piano or fiddle. Intermediate students will have a good understanding of their instrument, and will be able to play more fluidly. Advanced students will have excellent understanding of their instrument and will want to learn tunes that are somewhat challenging.

Our instructors won't single you out for solos so don't worry about being put on the spot. The day is about learning and having fun.

We often receive emails from people who have played other genres (ie classical piano) and aren't sure which classes to attend. Our instructors are always on hand during morning registration to answer specific questions about the material they have chosen to teach. They will best be able to guide you on which class will be appropriate for you.

What if I choose the wrong class?

All of our instructors work together beautifully. We want you to get the most out of the day. If you decide the class you started in is too easy, no problem! You can switch at any time. If you are in class that is moving a little quicker than you would like, that's fine too! Just bump back a level. We have folks on hand to help move pianos when necessary. No one minds and no one is ever offended by this. Our goal is to help you have the best day you possibly can.

Will I receive the class material ahead of time?

At this Workshop, our instructors do not give out their teaching material in advance.

What do I need to bring?

- Fiddle players need to have their own instrument. In addition they should bring a music stand and a recording device (if they want to record the tunes they are learning)

- Piano players need to bring a keyboard, stand, and extension cord. If possible, we ask our piano players to bring headphones. They may also wish to bring a recording device. It may sound like a lot, but we have willing volunteers to help make setting up a breeze.

Can I play in the evening concert?

Of course you can! In fact we would love it if you did!!!! We will have a concert sign up sheet available on the day of the Workshop. Our Volunteers will help to point you in the right direction.

Can I participate in the afternoon jam session?

Yes, yes yes. In fact, for many people, this is their favourite part of the whole day. We have volunteers to help move pianos into the gym and get things set up. This instructor led jam lasts about 45 minutes and features tunes for every level. We will release a list of jam tunes prior to the Workshop so you can gather up the music and be ready to play along.

What is the MFA Meeting? Who should attend?

The MFA meeting is open to everyone. Our Executive, Committee Chairs, and Advisors discuss all of the activities that the MFA facilitates throughout the year. We encourage all of our participants to come. We are always looking for fresh ideas. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Can I buy tickets for the evening concert in advance?

Tickets for the evening concert are only available at the door. We have lots of seating available. Doors open at 6:15pm.

Do I need to know how to read music to take part in the workshop?

No. Our instructors have several different methods of learning available. You do not have to read sheet music to participate.
