Maritime Fiddlers Association

Fiddling is embedded in our Maritime culture and today this popular music is played by Fiddle Groups throughout the region.

Here is a list of some of these groups.

The Wednesday Evening Fiddlers

                 The Wednesday Evening Fiddlers was founded in February of 1988, the group includes fiddlers and accompanists from the Victoria/Carleton County region of New Brunswick and neighboring Aroostook County Maine. The group plays for many local fund raisers, nursing homes, variety shows and jamborees. On any given occasion the group will have Fiddlers from age 10 to 95 on stage playing Downeast style fiddle selections.

             The group meets each Wednesday, 7:00 PM at the St James United Church Hall, West Riverside Dr, Perth-Andover. Musicians and guests are always welcome, there is a voluntary donation at the door.

             The group hosts a Fiddle-Doo in late Sept., a Christmas Party in Dec.

Lunenburg County Fiddler's Club

Lunenburg County Fiddler's Club was founded in 1988 by Harold Langille, assisted by his wife, MaryAnn and local fiddle maker, St.Clair Wentzell. They meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays, September through May at St Paul's Lutheran Church, Phoenix St., Bridgewater, N.S. A typical evening includes a business meeting, a one hour instructional period, and a one hour jam session. Instruction is offered in fiddle, guitar and keyboard.
Their club objectives are: the promotion of Down East style of fiddling, fiddling for fun, teaching the art of fiddling. They are an incorporated, non-profit organization, supporting Christmas Daddies and 5 local food banks. Locally, they provide music at seniors homes, variety shows, fairs, etc.
Highlight performances include; Special Olympics, Halifax Metro Centre, official opening of the Sheraton Hotel Casino, Halifax, NS, Canoe 1997 World Championship, Lake Banook, Dartmouth, N.S., Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival, Maritime Old Time Fiddling Contest, Fiddles of the World, and Trade and Convention Centre, Halifax, NS.
Plans are being made to hold a 20th anniversary celebration in 2008.

Thursday Evening Fiddlers

                 The Thursday Evening Fiddlers was formed in November 1999 to encourage group fiddling for fun.

             The group of 25 to 40 musicians plus guests, meet on Thursday evenings 7 to 9 PM at the St. Marks Anglican Church Hall, Sussex Corner NB

             Fiddlers, accompanists, and guests are always welcome to join in the weekly jam session. There is a voluntary donation at the door.

Happy Go Lucky Fiddlers

                 The Happy Go Lucky Fiddlers was formed in Dec 1994, with three fiddlers, a guitar player and a reader of poems. to entertain at nursing homes and special care homes in the Sussex and surrounding area.

             The group has grown to 30 to 40 members and while still entertaining at nursing homes and special care homes, also plays for many Birthday party’s, reunions, & benefits around Southern New Brunswick.

              The group meets for practice every second Monday 7:30 to 9:30 PM at the Centennial Hall Apohaqui, 5 miles from Sussex on No 1 highway.

             Fiddlers, accompanists and guests are always welcome to join in the Monday evening sessions.

The Kings Fiddlers

The club was formed in 1987 and has over 40 members including the rhythm section. We play Down East tunes as well as western swing and hymns. A number of the members have recordings and have composed many tunes. The club actively supports newer fiddlers with a teaching session at each regular meeting. We have performed at the Maritime Old Time Fiddling Championship, on Breakfast Television and we frequently make other public appearances. Club meetings are held at the Wolfville Lions Club on the 2nd & 4th Wednesday each month except July and August and guests are most welcome.

The Down Home Fiddlers

The Down Home Fiddlers started in 1999 and meet weekly on Wednesday 7:00 - 10:00pm at the North Woodside Community Centre, 230 Pleasant Street, Dartmouth, NS (except on the second Wednesday of each month when the group plays for a Senior's Dance - all welcome). The Group has 30 plus members including accompanists. They mostly play Down East Music but include a variety of other styles. They host workshops periodically and encourage keyboard players to bring their keyboards and play along.

The group regularly volunteers to play at senior’s centers, nursing homes and benefits. Since 2001 they have Sponsored an Award at the Maritime Fiddle Festival and assisted with other sponsorships. Visitors are always welcome to participate or just listen.

The Miramichi Fiddlers

The Miramichi Fiddlers was founded in 1991 and now consists of 35 members. (2008) They entertain at many Fiddle Doos and other events throughout New Brunswick. The group has two cassette recordings and a new CD [Miramichi Fiddlers] to their credit, a nice souvenir that can be purchased at local Fiddle Doos or at Norm's Barber Shop, 119 Jail Street, Newcastle, Miramichi. The annual Miramichi Fiddle Festival is held in conjunction with the Miramichi Heritage Foundation the first week in August for information contact Carmel Jagoe at (506) 622-7016.
The Miramichi Fiddlers meet for practice every Wednesday evening at 7:00pm at the Seamans Hospital Heritage Building, Vye Street, Douglastown, Miramichi, N.B. Everyone is welcome to join in or just come and listen.

The Bluenose Fiddlers

The Bluenose Fiddlers consist of three fiddlers, two guitar players and a keyboard player. The group was formed in 1996 and meet on Tuesday evenings at the home of Maureen Mossman (see below). Visitors are always welcome. The group performs mini-concerts at schools demonstrating a variety of musical styles on the fiddle, as well as playing for nursing homes, variety shows, and local charity fundraisers of all types. The group has also played for political rallies, weddings and family reunions.
The Bluenose Fiddlers have three recording projects to their credit, " Fiddlin' Frenzy", Rocky Shores" and newly released " Home By The Sea". All are original tunes from the south shore of Nova Scotia. A book containing all of the music, lyrics and chord charts is also available. CD's are $20.00 and the book sells for $30.00

The Park Avenue Fiddlers

The Park Avenue Fiddlers were formed in 1990 by a number of fiddle students of Winston Crawford (Sussex, NB), and are based out of the Park Avenue United Church in Saint John, NB. This group consists of fiddlers, vocalists, and a number of traditional accompanists from all ages. The group plays primarily Down East and traditional old time fiddling around the Saint John area for various private and public functions, as well as volunteering their time to play at a number of local community functions, nursing homes and senior citizen complex's.
The Park Avenue Fiddlers also host a Fiddle Jam from 7:30pm - 9:30pm on the last Sunday of the month. All fiddlers, traditional accompanists and fiddle enthusiasts are invited to attend. Coffee, tea, and donuts are provided and a free will offering at the door is requested.

Cherryfield Fiddlers

The Cherryfield Fiddlers host a Kitchen Party on the 1st & 3rd Saturday of each month from October to April at the United Baptist Church, 1199 McLaughlin Dr, Moncton NB.
Activities start at 7 PM with fiddling, singing, and various other instruments accompanied by the House Band. A short break is taken at 8:30 PM for tea and a lunch and a chance to meet and greet, followed by more music until 10 PM.
Musicians and guests are always welcome to drop in and take part in the evening or just set back and enjoy the music.
A voluntary donation is accepted at the door to cover expenses.

The Sussex Avenue Fiddlers

The Sussex Avenue Fiddlers formed in 1978 under the direction of Ivan Hicks, is a group of more than 50 old time fiddlers and accompanists based in Riverview NB Canada. This group, from ages 10 to 90, plays a variety of instrumental music - Down East fiddling, Scottish, Gospel, etc. and also features vocals. They have been very popular on the concert circuit having performed all over eastern Canada, Nashville, Branson, Louisiana etc. They volunteer to play for benefits, seniors, church services and nursing homes.
They meet Wednesday Evenings at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church Hall, Woolridge Ave., Riverview at 7:30 PM. Visitors welcome.
